About Mountainside
"Ah, Mountainside …” Just to the north of Westfield,
Mountainside is often referred to as "country living at its
best!" You'll find Ranches, Colonials, Capes, all styles of
homes, living comfortably on the same meandering tree-bordered
lanes. And, compared with its neighbors, Mountainside's taxes
are LOW, despite the fact that commerce in Mountainside intrudes
only for a couple of blocks on Mountain Ave and along Rt. 22.
While Mountainside’s heritage is relatively young – only about
115 years – its traditions are rich in family life and
neighborliness. Mountainside's locale, the mountainous northern
fringe of Westfield, contributed to its name. The schools are
good, with those at the high school level attending the
prestigious Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights.
Mountainside parents are passionately invested in their
offspring's education and social climate, giving rise to a very
committed and close-knit community.
With the Watchung Mountains to the North, families often take
trail hikes, enjoying summer fun and the fall foliage. Dinner
"out" might be at one of the numerous and delightful restaurants
that line Rt. 22 -- like L'Affaire -- where your mood can be
quiet and elegant or lively and fun. And for shopping, there's
unprecedented variety on both sides of Rt. 22, as well as in the
nearby Westfield and Scotch Plains business centers.
All in all ... it's a good life in Mountainside!"
Some background and other facts
The farmers in the hills of Westfield, preferring the simple
life of the northern four square mile area, decided to separate
from Westfield in 1895, and created the Borough of Mountainside.
Much of Mountainside was developed since World War II under wise
and careful planning by the Mayor and Town Council. Mountainside
is distinguished by its single family homes on curving
tree-lined streets and a small industrial area bordering Route
22.
The approximately 7,060 residents of Mountainside enjoy
comparatively low taxes and send their children first to
Beechwood School (Pre-K through Grade 2), then to Deerfield,
Grades 3 through 8, and finally to Governor Livingston High
School in Berkeley Heights (one of the best in Union County) to
which they are bussed.
